What Did I Do To Prep This Week?

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

What did I do to prep this week?

By Bev Sandlin, Executive Editor

The EMP articles that Rourke posted really made me think. And I passed them around on Facebook which elicited a number of questions that I tried to answer – the most frequent answer being, “It has happened before and it will happen again (solar flare), it is just a matter of when. Are you prepared if something like this should happen?”

And it got me to thinking about the 8 Billion people on the face of this planet, and how we are all interconnected. If some rogue state did detonate a low grade nuke over the United States causing an EMP, yes, perhaps as much as 90% of our population would perish in 6 months. But what about the rest of the world?

If the economic engine that is the United States stopped working – no purchases, no exports, no information…

Economies world wide would topple – no exports, no imports, no debt payments, no foriegn aid going out. So many businesses around the world would grind to a halt in the chaos, workers laid off, money around the world may not be worth anything.

In the Midwest, our corn and soybeans are often shipped to China and other countries in the form of economic trade or outright aid to starving populations. North America is the bread basket of the world. Not only our people would starve, but billions around the world would die also.

The entire world would be in chaos!

And perhaps that is why it has not happened already. Even the leaders of the rogue nations understand that the entire world is interconnected. And they may hate the United States, but without us, it would be a lot worse for everybody in the world.

But a big enough CME (solar flare), that is another story. And every nation is now dependent on electricity and computers.

I was thinking about all of that while weeding the gardens (Moisture, Heat, WEEDS!); cutting up downed limbs into firewood and stacking it up, just in case; and working on my chicken pen.

I really can’t let my chickens run a. because they tear up the garden so, and b. the hawks are bad here. But I am crchicken pentrying for a more sustainable approach to chicken husbandry. I had an extra rabbit cage not being used, so I decided to try growing grass in their pen. I set the case on 2x4s for a little height and planted the grass. Once it comes in good, I should be able to allow them to graze it free choice. I’ll let you know how that goes. And water has always been an issue. I’m currently trying this tub that is about a foot high with a little solar pump in it to keep it circulating and fresh. Anything shorter and when they scratch it gets horribly muddy. Not that they seem to mind, but I do.

And I have been rearranging our preps as we have been using them.

And this week I took some of that 1mil mylar I bought last winter and cut and taped it onto 5 windows to help with reflecting the heat from the sun in the house. Thin but tough and I was surprised with how easy it was to work with.

Okay Patriots, what did YOU do this week to prepare?

A smile for you…
