What did I do to prep this week?

By Bev Sandlin, Executive Editor

What a week! We got another 12 inches of snow on Monday, more on Tuesday and Wednesday and more this weekend! Preparedness this week was having a snow shovel at every door, actually, I couldn’t even open the front door. I had to open the garage door to shovel out the front door, so I could open it! Go ahead and grin you Southerners!

I didn’t even get plowed out until Tuesday! Bob couldn’t make it home Monday—motel for him. And a tree came down on the fence line, horse out, so trudging through two feet of accumulated snow in the woods to track where she got out was a labor at any age!

On a sobering note, after trucking through the snow for maybe half a mile, that evening my chest suddenly felt like an elephant had sat on it. Struggling with breathing and a little dizzy (I’m kind of a ditz anyways though.) I started to get concerned. Mentioned my symptoms to Bob. He suggested I take my blood pressure (Wacko blood pressure can do all kinds of things to a person.)–that was okay for me.

Women’s heart attack symptoms can be quite different from a man’s. I called the 24 hour nurse hotline and chatted with her. Pain in arm, jaw or back? Excessive sweating? No, not really and I had already taken an aspirin. She suggested I go to the ER. Hmmm, 35 mile drive at night on bad roads. I said, “No thanks,” and hung up.

But I did make a plan—PREPARED. I called the neighbor and told her how I was feeling (Bob works nights, so I am alone.) and that I was taking the car keys to bed with me. If they hear the car alarm go off, call 911. I took the phone to bed with me too and I left the door unlocked. I was just exhausted, woke up 11 hours later—a record for me!

Preview of the week to come…
