What did I do to prep this week?

By Bev Sandlin, Executive Editor

First, I would like you all to know that we have a new Editor-At-Large! Pam of the MayflowerTradingCompany.com. Please go here: http://www.mayflowertrading.com/About-Us_ep_7.html Which tells a bit about Pam’s experience with homesteading and living in Idaho! Then take the time to explore her website that focuses on self-reliance products! Welcome Pam!

Well, between that nasty ice storm at the beginning of the week, followed by subzero double digit temps, I’m ready for spring! Are you? I thought I would share a preparedness item that I’m sure is forgotten in most households. Below is a picture of removable ice cleats that that I have on my winter boots. A few dollars at your local farm store and they stretch to accommodate multiple sizes of boots. Trust me on this, if you have ever landed on your back and cracked your head against the ice a good one (read concussion) these ARE a preparedness item! About 3/8 inch plastic cleats that do wear off during the season. And no, you do not want to walk around the house in them as they pick carpet and scratch wood and vinyl floors! But they could save you from grave injury or even your life!

Actually, other than staying warm and attempting to keep up with all the great stuff the EALs are sending in, I haven’t done much for preparedness!  My mind strayed to other ventures… On the one day it got into the 20’s, I went fossil hunting! Brought back another trilobite, among other treasures! And then I proceeded to teach myself how to “prep” a fossil and cut it out of the matrix with my angle grinder loaded with a masonry blade—that took a little whiskey courage! I then entered it in the January 2013, Fossil of the Month Contest with about 10 minutes to spare on January 31st! My hobby! I also created a Bluff Country Fossils webpage as a volunteer activity for our local State Park, Forestville/Mystery Cave to link to, at the request of a park ranger. Just need to meet up with a friend to figure out how to put it on the web now. And I am working on another webpage! So, I may not be prepping, but I have been productive trapped inside most of the week!

We have lots of great stuff in store for you this week, including another installment from Harold! Preview of the week to come…
