By Bev Sandlin,
What did I do to become more self-reliant this week? These didn’t all happen this week, but I remembered them this week. Yes, early oldtimers…
The power company came out and reset my electric meter to accept grid-tied solar power. No charge for this “upgrade”, but I need to sign a contract that I don’t become my own power company and give them more power than my bill is – not a problem! :-D
Then I went and did a mega-shop of case goods at Aldi’s. Next shop will be before winter sets in. I save almost 50% on our grocery bill by shopping this way! The fewer trips to the store the less likely I am to impulse buy and spend money where it doesn’t need to be spent. It also takes less time and gasoline. And I hate shopping, so this works. Store what you eat; eat what you store. To me, preparedness is all about saving money in the long run.
And I put some money back in my BOB that I had borrowed from it. Not good that I borrow from it when cash gets tight, but very good that I am restocking it. And hey, it is like a miniature savings account!
With my first grandchild on the way, I bought my first silver this week from CBMint (on the sidebar and HERE). My plan is to give her silver for the giving holidays so that the family is prepared and (We all hope nothing happens, but…) when she is ready for college there will be a little fund there for her. They have just lowered their minimum purchase to $50, so it was affordable. If you too decide to buy some silver, please click through on the sidebar so they know you came from SCP – Thank You! :)
And I should share that SCP is in the top 1/3 of all prepper sites! All this knowledge we share here is helping a lot of people!
Plus I did some bonding time with my own Mother this week. Time somehow seems to be going faster and faster, and we are not getting any younger. Had a wonderful time with Mom. :)
And two of my sister’s stopped by together unexpectedly! We are all three gardeners. Apparently we have all played around with or are playing around with square foot gardening in raised beds. And we are ALL going back to row gardening! Why? As I was writing them down they got too long so they will be coming up this week.
Okay, this is YOUR site. Many of you have emailed me about concerns in preparing your family and friends. But the traditional preparedness sites use a lot of “the sky is falling” tactics that can turn people off to preparedness. SCP has a new look (Thank You, Rourke!) where preparedness is just part of the header. All of these topics are part of preparedness as we know it. We can’t do anything about the name of the site.
Rourke and I have been chatting about how to get the message out in a softer format. SCP doesn’t do scare tactics or politics, preparedness is Biblical, and it just plain saves money if you do it right.
We are thinking about maybe going to one topic a week on Frugality, Health, Preparedness, Self-Reliance, Homesteading, a Video of the Week, and the Sunday Self-Reliance Share. What do YOU think?
Would you then be comfortable posting select topics on your facebook page, pintrest, emailing links to friends and relatives on articles you think appropriate for them? Would this soften the message enough where they might listen – kind of a backdoor to preparedness…?
Do you have any other ideas that may work? Please email me at bcfossillady at gmail dot com
The top article this week that you hit the like button on or shared was the Questions & Answers At Survivalprepper-Joe.com So I’m thinking you enjoyed reading my answers to his questions. :)
This site is all about YOU! The older self-reliant individual. SHARE!
Please email us at: scprepper at outlook dot com, checked a couple times a week by Rourke.
Or email me at my personal box: bcfossillady at gmail dot com, checked a couple times a day usually, when I’m not at my Mother’s. I can’t do it all by myself…
Okay Patriots, how were you more self-reliant this week?
“A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions.
The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”
