July 26th Went “deer” hunting…….
Bill asked me if I wanted to go hunting today. Of course I went. I was never much of a hunter in my younger days. We figured much of the deer population – like the squirrels – was thinned out. He knew a place approx 18 miles away. He said the area was not very populated so there shouldn’t be very many people around.
We headed out at 9:00am – one of the latest deer hunts I have ever been on. No orange vests – and no license. I took my Winchester 94 .30-.30 lever action and he brought an old beat up .300 Savage rifle – not even sure the make. Anyways, the drive was no problem and he was right about not very many people. We headed off into the woods and walked I guess 500 yards and found a tree stand. It was one of those that you lean up against a tree and chain it off. Bill took the stand and I walked another 150 or so yards and sat down and put my back up against a tree. I was basically perched over the top of a small gully.
We stayed put for about 3 hours when it came out of the woods. I say “it” but there were more than one. I took careful aim at almost 50 yards with my open sights, controlled my breathing – and at the bottom of a breath I squeezed the trigger. That turkey had no idea what hit him as he toppled over, fluttered a bit, and laid to rest. The second one took off across the hillside towards Bill. I thought my luck couldn’t get better because it was still a wide open shot. I aimed just a few inches in front of him and squeezed off another round. At the very same time I heard another shot. It was Bill. All I saw were feathers fly up in the air.
I ran down and picked up the first one shot and made my way over the second. Bill told me good shot as I walked up. I told him that I had never shot a turkey before – let alone two!! Bill asked me what I meant, because he shot the second one. Well – either way we had two turkeys.
Well, I told him either way – our families would be having a very early Thanksgiving.
I think M was very impressed with my hunting prowess when I told her the story of my shooting TWO turkeys……
