August 5th   News from the scanner…..

Bill informed myself and several other community members of what he caught on the scanner last night.

The mysterious disease effecting some folks on the West Coast has started to spread east. Reports are coming in from Nevada and Arizona. Same symptoms – severe fever, diarrhea, and vomiting resulting in death. Reports state that there are scientists with the CDC trying to find a treatment or cure.

Also on the scanner were reports that some state governments were trying to remain in existence. States including Texas, Montana, Wyoming, and North and South Dakota seem to be doing better than others. The state governments are having minimal effects. Large cities are struggling to maintain control over looting and mass crime. The larger cities are the only places where curfews are actively trying to be enforced. Just not enough law enforcement as most cops are staying at home to be with families.

I talked to Ben tonight. At 8:00pm I turned on the BaoFeng handheld radio to 147.025 MHz and in no time I heard Ben’s voice. We talked a few minutes. His trip home was uneventful which I was glad to hear. I told him about the sickness moving east. We decided to stick to talking every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday – and monitor all other days.

After Ben and I talked I thought that we needed to use some code words and be careful of what we say. You never know who else might be listening. Going to look through the manual tomorrow and see what else this radio can do.

Cool thing – Caleb came over and said he wanted to say Hi to Ben on the radio. One of the first times I had seen him smile.
