August 4th   Ben pays us a visit…..

Ben stopped by and paid us a visit today. I had been meaning to go and visit with him and family – just hadn’t had a chance. He took a look at what we were doing with the chickens he gave us a “thumbs up”. We hope to have a few a few chicks running around shortly.

Ben brought us a surprise and I could not have been grateful enough. He presented me with two small hand-held HAM radio’s. I thanked him of course and then asked why he brought them to me. He went on to say that we are about 19 miles apart if you drew a straight line. He said that he has a pretty powerful radio with a tall antenna and he felt that we could probably talk to each other.  He mentioned he bought several of these radio’s and could spare them. Knowing nothing about HAM radio’s he showed me a few of the features on the radio and then told me to make sure I had it set for frequency 147.025 MHz. He said his radio is often on and he scans a variety of channels – and then sets it to 147.025 MHz. I suggested that we try to connect up tomorrow night at 8:00pm and see if it works.

I asked him why he brought us two and he said you just never know. So true. We talked for awhile, he met Aaron and Caleb and got ready to go. When he got to his truck he reached in, grabbed something, and turned around and put his hand out. I took this small silver piece of metal asking what is was. He said its an adapter for the handheld’s to mount a regular CB antenna – if I had one.

I thanked him and reminded that tomorrow night we would try to talk over the radio’s.

Interesting….Caleb only talked to Ben for a few minutes but he really seemed to take to him. It would be good to be able to talk to Ben once in a while.  Maybe there are others I can talk to as well. Just have to figure out how to use it.

Glad to have a friend like Ben.
